Surfing towards a better life
Surfing is so much more than just a sport –it is also therapeutic. And it is that therapeutic element that is front and centre of everything the Surf Project foundation does. The Surf Project is a Dutch initiative that has been providing surfing lessons to children with Down syndrome, autism, and ADHD (aged 8-18) since 2014. The foundation’s main goal is to help these children build self-confidence and improve their social skills. The children surf in small groups with a certified coach. You can see just how proud they are of themselves when they are surfing, and the lessons really boost their self-esteem.The skills they learn and develop in the water play a key role in their day-to-day lives.
International surf therapy network
Since 2018, the Surf Project has been affiliated with a broad international network for surf therapy: the International Surf Therapy Organization (ISTO). Members of this network share best practices and participate in international research on the effect of surfing on well-being.
As an organization, we are passionate about making a contribution to our society – which is why we have been a supporter of the Surf Project foundation for many years. And by doing so, we put the words of our mission statement – to help everyone ride more – into action.
